5 Things you should Give Your Children during the Heat Wave

Most parts of our country are experiencing a particularly dreadful summer this year. The blazing sun makes it impossible to venture out of the house even into the courtyard.  For kids, this means staying and playing indoors. We can help children remain cool externally with air conditioners, air coolers and with regular showers but the body needs to be cooled down internally too. This is crucial as it can play a key role in saving children from dehydration and heatstroke.

 Mentioned below are five things that parents should give their children during a heatwave to keep them cool internally:

1.Curd: Easily one of the best things to give a child in heated summers not just because of its cool nature but more so because of its nutritional benefits. Curd has probiotic bacteria, also known as good bacteria which can be helpful for the body. Since curd is made from milk predominantly, it is full of calcium, Vitamin D, healthy gut bacteria and protein. You can give it as an accompaniment to usual lunch or dinner or can give it as a snack by making Shrikhand or even serving your child’s favourite fruit with curd or by making a curd cheese dip accompanied with some veggie sticks and crackers. Why not take the benefit of mango season and make mango flavoured Shrikhand with curd? Sounds delicious already.

2.Watermelon: Red, juicy and cooling! Watermelon is loved by one and all. The juicy bits of watermelon contains 92 per cent of water and are loaded with essential nutrients. Watermelon can help children remain hydrated and are full of vitamin C; which helps boost the immune system and healing wounds. It also contains Vitamin A, which is good for eyesight, and potassium which keeps healthy. You can give your child some watermelon in the form of watermelon juice, fresh-cut pieces of watermelon, watermelon and cheese salad. To give it a twist that kids will love, you can add some mint leaves to watermelon juice and make watermelon popsicles. Your kids will love them.

3.Sugarcane Juice: The green liquid that feels like a cool breeze on a heated summer day with the very first sip is sugarcane juice. The juice from sugarcane is one of the best things you can give to your growing child due to its nutritional content. It is one of the richest sources of calcium. In addition to calcium, it has various antioxidants that can help keep diseases and bacteria at bay. Sugarcane juice is known to ease a sore throat as well as serve as an instant source of an energy boost. So the next time your child might feel dehydrated, reach for a glass of sugarcane.

4.Cucumber: Due to its high water content, cucumbers are an ideal cooling snack for children in summers. Cucumbers help in maintaining body heat and are full of vitamins. It is made up of 96 per cent water which is the reason why eating cucumbers quenches thirst easily and replenishes minerals as well as water in the body.

5.Coconut Water: Coconut known as the tropical drink of gods, it is said that children as well as aged in particular should have coconut water before noon.  Coconut water is an instant energy drink that is both pure and natural. It is full of electrolytes, as well as essential minerals making it a perfect drink for summers.

The above mentioned things are all healthy. Feel free to indulge in some delicious ice-cream sundaes, some ice sorbets or mangoes and cream with your child. After all, what are summers without ice-cream and mangoes!
